How do you know if your loft is suitable for a loft conversion?

Living in the UK is becoming increasingly expensive, especially in Essex, where house prices rise by around 6% each year. This means it is becoming harder and harder to get on the property ladder, with most individuals needing to take out a housing loan to purchase their first home. Most people also need to move into rented accommodation when they are newly married or have started families because it would be financially impossible to afford their own home within the capital city. Essex Loft conversions have become an increasingly popular way of adding extra living space at affordable costs – but what do you need to consider before choosing any attic insulation?

The main criteria for loft conversions are twofold.

1) Minimum head height of 2.30m

2)A relatively high and wide pitch

Before considering any loft Conversion

How do you know if your loft is suitable for a loft conversion

1) You should know that if your roof is not suitable for a roof window, then you may have to rely on natural light alone, which can be very limiting as many choirs require some form of artificial lighting.

2) Are you planning to use the space for storage? If you opt for regular insulation, it will be hard to reach those boxes at the top of your attic. Still, with the rolls, it isn’t too tricky – unless you choose rigid foam insulation, in which case it would be best to leave off hanging clothes, or otherwise they risk getting damaged by ‘clinging’ onto sharp edges.

3) If you’re going to convert your attic into a bedroom, then it might be best to use loft insulation boards rather than rolls to minimize the risk of suffocation should you roll over onto the insulation in your sleep.

4) The last thing you need to consider is that if you are going to be removing your old roof, then it will undoubtedly require some professional help for them not to damage any surrounding property or injury themselves, so think about how much money this may cost before switching your current insulation.

Although many important things must be considered when determining whether or not you can convert your loft into extra living space, all that matters is that it meets both requirements – high head height and wide pitch. If this is the case, then go ahead with an attic conversion!
