Do you need permission to convert a loft UK?

Many homeowners wish to know if they are required to obtain planning permission before converting their loft. Essex loft conversions may not require planning permission except your home falls into one of the following categories:

1. Houses located in Conservation Areas
2. Houses in Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
3. Houses located in the Natural Park.

If your home is located in any of the aforementioned locations, you, unavoidably, must obtain planning permission. You can contact us for more clarification about the location of your home, and whether you need planning permission before you can undertake the conversion of your loft.
You do not need to get planning permission to convert your loft if the following conditions are satisfied or met:

1. The new roof would not be raised more than 50m3 for semi-detached and detached houses or 40m3 of space for terraced houses. However, past extension work on the roof will be considered when considering your application for loft conversions.

2. The extended space will not be higher than the plane of the existing roof slope towards the highway.

3. Any extensions will not be higher than the peak of the existing roof.

4. Balconies or platforms will not be raised.

5. The new roofing materials must be very close to or match the original roofing materials

6. Other extensions or dormers must be set back at least 200mm from the original eaves, except it is not possible.

7. No extensions must overhang the outer surface of the house’s original wall

If the above requirements are met or satisfied, to do not have to apply for planning permission. However, you must obtain planning permission before you convert your life if your home fails in any of the above requirements.
