In 2020, as far as we can all agree, there was a great deal of change, with more people occupying their time at home. Thus, home design trends changed as a result.
In this article, we’re sharing some of the most captivating trends of last year which we predict will have a huge effect on home decor and architecture well into 2021.
Design Trend #1: Expensive Workspaces & Home Offices
During the COVID pandemic, you have probably been forced to turn random rooms in your house into full-time offices. Home offices designed with thoughtfulness have quickly become a trend. Now that we’re approaching 2021 and are hopeful there will be a medicine within a relatively short timeframe, there’s no denying that the pandemic has opened businesses around the world’s eyes to the possibility of working from home. Hence, we find it prudent to predict that high-end home offices and workspaces will remain a favored trend throughout 2021.
Design Trend #2: Multipurpose spaces for all types of activities at home
Think again if the idea of flex space conjures up images of drab, sparse offices. Nowadays, flex space offers more options to designers than a simple office setting as people increasingly work from home. The design-build professionals at our firm have helped countless homeowners use their existing flex spaces in more creative ways in the last year or so. Some homeowners turned their garages for garage gyms, guest houses, utility rooms, and more into at-home gyms and outdoor spaces. If you had an extra room in your house, what would you do with it?
Design Trend #3: Improving Air Quality & Sustainability
People spend a great deal of time indoors, so it’s not surprising they are looking for ways to improve their indoor air quality and efficiency. There have been many home improvement projects recently that focus specifically on improving air quality in homes.
Over the last year, air-conditioning, heating, and ventilation upgrades have also been popular with our contractor team. In addition to airtight windows and carbon dioxide-absorbing houseplants, many homeowners now invest in additional layers of insulation to reduce energy costs. Adding insulation to the home also creates a solid soundproofing barrier, helping to ensure family members are not disturbed during the busy working day or at night.
Design Trend #4: Vibrant Color Palettes to Bring Life to Your Room
People who spend too much time at home often feel depressed. Therefore, it is not surprising that warm, comforting paint colors are becoming more popular in houses recently. Many of the most widely used color trends even use earth tones like navy blue and olive green to tie back to nature, which makes sense given our lack of outdoor spaces at the moment.
We’ve seen people choose minimalist approaches to living rooms, dining rooms, and kitchen cabinets, as well as people who go all out with an explosion of colors. This year’s bold color-oriented trend for home decor will surely brighten the spirits of everyone, and we’re looking forward to what the new year will bring in terms of color trends.
